Born in Bude Cornwall Married Sylvia Payne 15/1/1949 in Bude Registry Office Cornwall.

Derek a Painter & Decorator by trade, served his national service on HMS Gambia, mainly in the Far East. He and his father William spent their spare time fishing from their boat out of Bude.

In 1957 with the lack of employment in Bude Derek & Sylvia decided to move to Bridgwater in Somerset, with the hope of employment.

Life was not a bed of roses at this time, we lived in a small caravan at Lockiers Farm, Westonzoyland, though great fun for my sister and I, feeding the young lambs and hiding from the geese, conditions were cramped and it was two years before we were offered a council house in Bridgwater and with Derek in full time employment, things were looking up. We had a bedroom each, a large garden to play in and it overlooked farm land, what more could we want.
